Why We Built It
Over the past year, requests from our own clients kept pointing to the same small, recurring problem. A restaurant needed a quick way to link a printed table tent to their digital menu. We decided to build a version of this tool the way we think it should have worked from the start: open it, generate what you need, download it, done. No account, no email capture, no artificial limits on how many codes you can create. We also wanted it to work the way our own development team would expect a well-built tool to work, generating instantly as you type rather than waiting on a separate "generate" step, and working offline once loaded, since plenty of the situations where someone actually needs a QR code, at a market stall, inside a venue with patchy WiFi, backstage before an event, are exactly the moments a tool that depends on a live server connection tends to fail.
The Gap in Most Existing Free Tools
We looked at a number of the QR generators already available online before building our own, and the pattern was consistent. Many are genuinely free to start, but push a watermark onto the downloaded image unless you upgrade. Others require an account before you can download anything at all, turning a thirty-second task into a five-minute signup flow. A smaller number handle the encoding on a remote server rather than in your browser, which raises a fair question for anyone encoding something like a WiFi password or a personal contact card: where does that data actually go once you hit generate. We wanted a tool that simply didn't have any of these trade-offs built in, and building it ourselves was the most direct way to make sure of that.
What the Tool Actually Does
The QR Code Generator supports eight distinct code types, covering the situations businesses actually run into:
- URL, for linking directly to a website, landing page, or menu
- Text, for sharing a plain message or instructions
- Email, pre-filled with a recipient address, subject, and body
- Phone, for a one-scan call action
- SMS, pre-filled with a number and message
- WhatsApp, opening a chat with a specific number and pre-filled message
- WiFi, encoding network name, password, and security type so guests connect without typing anything
- vCard, encoding a full contact card, name, organisation, job title, phone, email, and website, for business cards and networking
Once a type is selected, the code updates live as details are entered, no separate "generate" step to wait on. Every code can be customised before download, foreground colour, background colour, even the colour of the position markers (the three squares in the corners, sometimes called the "eyes" of the code), along with size in pixels, margin, and error correction level from L up to H. Finished codes download instantly as PNG for print and general use, or SVG for anyone who needs the code to scale cleanly to any size without losing sharpness, a business card next to a billboard, for instance.
Built to Work Offline, With Nothing Sent to a Server
Every code is generated directly in the visitor's browser. No content typed into the tool, whether that's a WiFi password, a phone number, or a personal vCard, is transmitted to or stored on Rafenthic's servers. Once the page is loaded, the generator continues to work even without an active internet connection, which matters for anyone testing codes at a venue or event with unreliable WiFi.
