Summarize with AI

A home renovation contractor asked us to look into a slow, steady ranking decline that had been going on for nearly a year. Nothing about their own site had changed much in that time, which made the backlink profile the obvious next place to check.

The Situation

The contractor had worked with a low-cost marketing vendor a couple of years earlier who promised "hundreds of backlinks fast." Those links had been sitting there quietly ever since, and the slow decline lined up almost exactly with when search engines had started getting noticeably better at identifying that kind of manipulative link pattern.

What We Found

Running a full backlink audit, the kind of process we walk through in our guide to auditing your backlink profile, turned up hundreds of low-quality links from unrelated foreign directories, spun content sites, and clusters of domains that all appeared to share the same hosting infrastructure, a strong sign of an artificial link network rather than genuine editorial links.

What We Did

We categorized every referring domain by quality and relevance, reached out to a handful of legitimate-looking sites requesting removal, and compiled a disavow file for the rest, submitted through Search Console following the same process we used when recovering the accounting firm case above. We also began building a small number of genuinely relevant, earned links through local press and supplier partnerships to replace what was being disavowed with something worth having.

The Result

The ranking decline stopped within a few weeks of the disavow taking effect, and over the following three months, rankings for the contractor's core service terms recovered gradually as the toxic link signals faded from Google's evaluation of the domain.

The Takeaway

Cheap, bulk backlinks almost always cost more later than they saved upfront. If you inherited a backlink profile from a previous vendor and aren't sure what's in it, an audit is worth running before assuming a ranking decline is a content or technical problem, and it pairs well with a broader negative SEO review to rule out anything happening beyond your own past decisions.
