Last month a herbal wellness brand came to us with a familiar complaint: decent rankings on desktop, almost nothing on mobile. Since most of their traffic was mobile to begin with, that gap was quietly costing them real revenue.
The Situation
Their product pages loaded fine on a laptop over office Wi-Fi, but the moment we tested on a throttled 4G connection, the homepage took over nine seconds to become interactive. Google's technical SEO signals, including Core Web Vitals, had been quietly working against them for months.
What We Found
A quick crawl turned up the usual culprits: unoptimized product photography served at full resolution, three separate marketing scripts loading synchronously before anything else on the page, and a font file that blocked rendering until it finished downloading. None of it was dramatic on its own, but stacked together it added up to a genuinely slow experience for anyone not on fiber internet.
What We Did
We compressed and resized every product image, deferred the non-essential scripts so they loaded after the main content, and swapped the blocking font load for a system-font fallback while the custom font finished loading in the background. We also cleaned up a handful of render-blocking CSS rules that were only needed on two pages sitewide but were being loaded on all of them.
The Result
Within a few weeks, mobile load times dropped from around nine seconds to under three, and Search Console's Core Web Vitals report moved from mostly "poor" to mostly "good" across their top landing pages. Rankings for their core product terms started climbing steadily, and mobile bounce rate dropped noticeably once people actually stuck around long enough to see the page.
The Takeaway
Page speed rarely fails because of one huge problem. It's usually five small ones happening at once, which is exactly why a proper SEO audit catches issues that a quick glance at the homepage never would. If your analytics show a gap between desktop and mobile performance, that's usually where to look first, and it belongs on your on-page SEO checklist every single time.
